Basunti is an idyllic private lakeside retreat in the foot hills of The Himalayas, situated in the state of Himachal Pradesh in North India and surrounded by the waters of the Maharana Pratap Sagar. It sits at the heart of a wildlife reserve and has been developed sympathetically in accord with the local environment.

Set in beautiful tropical gardens with oranges, mango and papaya trees, Basunti’s spacious residences provide comfort combined with spectacular views. Basunti has its own open air, thatch-roofed shala that is ideally suited for yoga, meditation, and other holistic activities. Otherwise, yoga can be enjoyed on the main house rooftop with unobstructed views of the Himalayan Mountains, plus every sunrise and every sunset!

The GOLDEN TEMPLE of Amritsar

The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Everybody, irrespective of cast, creed or race can seek spiritual solace and religious fulfilment without any hindrance. It also represents the distinct identity, glory and heritage of the Sikhs. To pen-down the philosophy, ideology, the inner and outer beauty, as well as the historical legacy of Sri Harimandir Sahib is a momentous task. It is a matter of experience rather than a of description.

McLeod Ganj / Dharamsala

Visit the Dalai Lama’s Temple in Mcleod Ganj, Dharamsala, including His Holiness’ residence and speech room. Try out Tibetan prayer wheels, or delicious dumplings (momos) fresh off the street. Enjoy scenic walks through the forest, with incredible views of the himalayas, all whilst breathing in the crisp fresh air.

BAIJNATH Shiv Temple

Vaidyanath Siva Temple, Baijnath is a famous 13th century temple dedicated to lord Shiva as Vaidyanath, ‘the Lord of physicians’. It is located in a small township called Baijnath in the Dhauladhar range of western Himalayas, 16 km from Palampur in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. The Baijnath temple has been continuously under worship ever since its construction in 1204 A.D. by two local merchants named Ahuka and Manyuka. The two long inscriptions in the porch of the temple indicate that a temple of Siva existed on the spot even before the present one was constructed. What happened to the shrine in the centuries that followed is not exactly known but it appears to have continued under worship, as there is clear evidence of repairs and renovations from time to time.


FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

I'm fairly new to Yoga. Is this retreat right for me?

Absolutely, All yoga classes offered can be adapted to all levels of experience. The retreat will host participants of all levels and of various styles/approaches to yoga. It’s a perfect opportunity for you to learn in a supportive, safe, and relaxed environment. You will certainly be taken care of!

I have dietary requirements. What food options will be available for me?

All meals on the retreat will be vegetarian. Vegan and gluten-free options can and will be catered for. Please share your dietary needs in advance, prior to the commencement of the retreat, to ensure you’re taken care of.

The kitchen, under the direction of David Butterworth (a founding member of Neal’s Yard Bakery, Covent Garden), produces a mouth-watering array of both European and local Indian vegetarian dishes, whole wheat breads and pastries, fresh juices from Basunti’s own fruit trees, and the option of fish – caught by the local fishermen. Meals are freshly prepared using fruits and vegetables grown in Basunti’s own gardens whenever possible, and supplemented by produce bought in the local markets. Most meals will include dahl, rice, salad, fruit, oatmeal, toast, and more. A mix of East and West. You may even be able to learn how to make the best samosas you’ve ever had!

I've never been to India before. Do I need to organise a tourist visa prior to arrival?

You must arrange a tourist visa prior to arrival. The standard Tourist Visa for Australian’s is a 6 month visa, costing around $100. You would need to download the appropriate forms off the internet, and send them away to the nearest embassy with your passport and visa photo. Or, you can book an appointment to submit your visa application in person. Once submitted, the turn around time is often very quick, around 1-2 weeks. Australian’s can now also obtain a 30 day visa upon arrival into India. However the application must be started online. Cost is around $60. The application will be registered to your passport, so when you arrive into India and proceed through immigration you will be processed there and obtain entry for 30 days.

Note – the means to applying for either of the above visas is via two completely different websites.

What vaccinations are required to visit India?

Please see your local doctor for specific advice for you.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends these vaccinations for travellers to India (as well as being up to date with measles, mumps, and rubella vaccinations):

Adult diphtheria and tetanus: Single booster recommended if none in the previous 10 years. Side effects include sore arm and fever.

Hepatitis A: Provides almost 100% protection for up to a year; a booster after 12 months provides at least another 20 years’ protection. Mild side effects such as headache and sore arm occur in 5% to 10% of people.

Hepatitis B: Now considered routine for most travellers. Given as three shots over six months. A rapid schedule is also available, as is a combined vaccination with Hepatitis A. Side effects are mild and uncommon, usually headache and sore arm. In 95% of people lifetime protection results.

Polio: In 2007 polio was still present in India. Only one booster is required as an adult for lifetime protection. Inactivated polio vaccine is safe during pregnancy.

Typhoid: Recommended for all travellers to India, even if you only visit urban areas. The vaccine offers around 70% protection, lasts for two to three years and comes as a single shot. Tablets are also available, however, the injection is usually recommended as it has fewer side effects. Sore arm and fever may occur.

Varicella: If you haven’t had chickenpox discuss this vaccination with your doctor.

Do you recommend travel insurance?

Absolutely. There are many providers out there. Be sure to check the fine print, the details of your policy, and what your policy DOES NOT cover. Some recommended Australian companies are: Travel Insurance Direct, Aussie Travel Cover, QBE, and 1 Cover. Be sure to be covered for repatriation should you need to return home due to emergency. Some insurance providers do not cover for airline insolvency!

Can I bring my partner or children?

This retreat is for adults only. If you would like your partner to join they’re absolutely welcome – please notify us upon booking. The same rates still apply whether they choose to participate fully in the retreat program or not. Let us know what your bedding preference is (twin or combined). Two deposits are required to confirm both places.

If you are a single parent, and would like to bring your teenage child (15+), please contact me to see if we can make arrangements.

I am traveling solo - will I be safe?

Please let me know when booking if you plan to travel solo. India is generally a very warm and welcoming place, despite it’s intensity and overwhelm for the senses. The general guidelines apply, particularly for solo women travellers – don’t walk the streets at night, do not carry large amounts of cash, and dress moderately. I have never had any concerns for my safety – even wandering the streets at night alone.

But of course bad things can happen (anywhere in the world). I can give you guidance around your plans and accommodation to ensure you’re doing the safest thing. I will also happily put retreat participants in contact with one another, in case you wish to meet up before or after the retreat to do some travel together.

What essentials do I need to bring with me?

Please bring a yoga mat (there are also very basic rubber mats for use at Basunti if you prefer), a reusable water bottle (to refill with filtered water), sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellant, cool comfortable yoga clothing, light layers for early morning yoga, any essential medication, fave toiletries, a book to read, your camera, notebook/journal (if that’s your thing), swimwear, towel/sarong (you can also by sarongs everywhere) for the pool/dam, a small amount of Indian rupees (eg. 1000 rupees), your credit card, an ATM card (be sure to tell your bank you’r going away so they don’t block your access), and a passport with 6 months validity minimum.

India in general is very cheap, and you can buy clothing upon arrival. You will be treated with much respect should you choose to wear traditional Indian attire (although it’s certainly not essential at Basunti). I can guide you around where to shop in Delhi if this is where you initially fly into. Please bring clothing that covers your shoulders and your knees. India is a conservative country. Light scarves or shawls always come in handy. You may wish to buy a warm shawl in northern India to throw over your shoulders for the morning and evening yoga practice when the temps will be a little cooler.

What will the weather be like?

Basunti, at 500m above sea level, has a unique micro-climate. The cooling presence of the lake, when water levels are high, means that the climate is tempered and breezes help keep the air fresh for much of the year.

Like much of the sub-continent, Basunti enjoys two seasons akin to perpetual high summer. From mid-March to mid-June, Basunti experiences warm, mainly dry and sunny days.

Basunti closes mid-May for monsoon season. When Basunti reopens for guests in late September the days are warm and fine, and the garden blooms all over again. This Indian summer lasts through October and November and into early December.

For the period of this retreat, day time highs are expected to be around 33 degrees celsius on average. The night time temp drops to around 20 degrees celsius on average.
